If you think a capital campaign will increase your giving you might be in for a surprise. That statement might shock you coming from a stewardship firm’s blog. Yet our empirical data has proven this true. As much as 90% of what is pledged in a capital campaign comes from your existing giving leaders.
So, giving does increase but the increase is seen more in those that are already giving as opposed to adding new, consistent long term donors. Any increase in giving is always a byproduct of the campaign not necessarily the result of the campaign. If after holding a capital campaign for facilities your attendance grows is it the campaign that increased giving or the new facility?
A capital campaign is not the same as an initiative to increase giving and givers. People who are struggling to give you $5 a week will not automatically become a consistent giver simply because you hold a capital campaign. As my friend, client and past president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Ronnie Floyd, once said to me,
“Pastors, need to stop thinking about giving ONLY when they have a capital campaign. They need to think about it 365 days a year!”
At The Charis Group we of course can help you raise capital dollars for any type of need. From debt reduction to relocation we have held every type of campaign imaginable. Yet here is a mantra we operate by…
It doesn’t do you any good to raise capital dollars if you can’t pay the light bill or salaries! So we are just as concerned about this Sunday’s offering as we are helping you raise capital dollars. You need both!
We focus on total stewardship, both annual budget giving AND capital campaign giving. You need a partner that understands how each differs and the complexity of the different “asks” a church must make. We have been the leaders in this for years. We have helped churches for almost twenty years keep their focus upon capital campaign giving AND regular giving. We help churches know what their Churn Rate is, the percentage of lost donors as opposed to gained donors. We keep abreast of your giving trends with regular empirical data. We then help craft giving plans to increase giving and givers. We do all of this on top of keeping up with your capital campaign through consistent contact and follow up.
Charis Group clients get free access to our Giving365 program that works to increase giving from week to week for the budget. Check out Giving365 here, Giving365 weekly giving plan Giving365 gives you weekly help as well as seasonal plans for summer, end of year, snowed out weekends, new giver plans and much more!
Other companies are copying our focus and for that we rejoice! Any time the Church is helped to increase giving we rejoice. It is about time the stewardship industry recognized what we have long realized, giving MUST be a 365 days a year focus for a church to be fully funded.
Get a partner that understands the complexities in today’s giving climate. Only then will you increase giving and givers.
