Few pastors know how to preach a capital campaign series. Failing here is where many a capital campaign is derailed. For any church the most powerful tool for communicating the need and message of a capital campaign is the platform or pulpit. Yet if you don’t use this tool correctly you can do more damage than good. So, let’s talk about how to preach during your capital campaign.
First, get over your fear of talking about giving. Too many pastors tip toe around the topic of money on the one hand and then when they do talk about it they typically use guilt. Guilt never works especially for gaining commitments to your capital campaign. It is not that we talk about money but how we talk about it. So,
Focus not on money but on missions and ministry. Before your donors give you another dollar they have to see a need and be convinced their gift matters. So cast a vision that captures their hearts because…
Vision drives everything! One of the three reasons people give to anything is because they believe in the work of that institution. In other words they have bought into the vision. So, if vision drives everything you MUST have the best vision possible. You vision must be…
- Clear – Does it make sense? Can someone repeat it back to you in two to three sentences?
- Concise – Your vision must be simple enough so that even a fifth grader can understand it.
- Compelling – This is the most important C of all! People give to that which matters.
Give your donors a reason to give and they will give! Help them see how your capital campaign will advance the vision of your church and you will have a greater chance for success. What better place is there to do that than from your pulpit? Always make the link between the gift and the vision and you will see an increase in giving!
Finally, ask with boldness and confidence. If truly your campaign will is based upon a compelling vision why would they NOT give to support it. The “ask” must be made with boldness. You have boldly declared that this project or whatever the campaign is about is a defining moment in the life of the church. Now you must boldly ask members to step up in support of that vision.
Preaching during a campaign is one of the most important elements towards a successful capital campaign. Don’t fail to use the power of your pulpit!
