If you are ever going to raise the funds you need to build what you want, you have to start somewhere! Recently a pastor called me with a $200K annual budget. The pastor said the church needed to finish a building they had started. The price for finishing the building is $2 million dollars! The pastor asked, “Can we raise this amount?”
Does Bill Gates go there? I did not ask that because I knew the church was comprised of lower middle class people. What I said was this,
The question is not can you raise $2 million dollars. The question is how long will it take you?
A pastor once said of me that I was a straight shooter. Tragically too many in my industry will tell you whatever they think you need to hear to get your name on a contract. We would rather tell you the truth than blow smoke at you. I need to eat but I am more concerned with having your respect rather than having your money.
The reality today is that capital campaigns are bringing in less than in the past. Forget that old sales line that you can raise 1 1/2 to 3 times your annual operating budget in a campaign. A good campaign today is about one times your annual operating budget. Anything above that is driven by five and six figure commitments. They are out there but if your church is comprised of lower middle class people you had better set your sites lower.
This might be a depressing post but it is the truth. We now live in a different time and era and the golden days of capital campaigns are passed. Yet you can still build what you need IF you are smart about it. Frankly that is where a good consultant comes in.
One thing is for sure though. You will never get that building built, remodeled or that debt paid off until you start somewhere!
Perhaps it will take you longer to raise all the money you need. Yet the longer you put off raising any money the more difficult it will be to ever complete that project. It can be done you just have to start somewhere!
No matter the size of your budget we can help you. I just finished a capital campaign for one of the largest churches in America. I am also working with the above pastor whose budget is $200K. Both pastors needed help and both reached out to us. What are you waiting on? You have to start somewhere so let’s get started!
