Even if your next capital campaign is far into the future you need to build your base now to raise capital dollars later. As we always say, “Take a snap shot picture of your current donor base and that is who you have to work with in terms of your capital campaign. 90% or more of all you raise in a capital campaign will come from those that are currently in your donor base.
Few people who join your church after your capital campaign will be motivated to give significant dollars to a project they were not present when it was being built. Think about it you are basically saying, “Thanks for joining. Now that you are here please help us pay down our debt.” They are not going to be excited about that. Yet I have heard church leaders repeatedly telling the congregation that after the building is built new donors will help pay for the cost of the building. It doesn’t work that way. This is one reason why it is imperative that you build your base now.
Recently I wrote about what one of America’s leading pastors told me…
“Pastors need to get out of thinking that the only time they have to raise funds is when they go into a capital campaign.” That was what Ronnie Floyd the current president of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of Cross Church of Northwest Arkansas, America’s 48th largest church told me not long ago. Ronnie “gets it” that unless your church is fully funded you will not be able to do what God has laid upon your heart. Yet he also points out the obvious problem that we have, getting church leaders to understand that raising funds is a 24/7 365 need.
Do you “get it?” Frankly few do. The tyranny of the urgent often keeps our attention deflected from good planning. Too often the last thing the typical pastor wants to think about is giving and givers. Yet if you are not thinking about that you might find your next campaign is far from successful.
Most capital campaign firms don’t get it or they simply don’t care. I once worked for one of the major stewardship firms in America. I left in part because I was tired of their sales team telling you the potential client things that simply were not true. They always gave the best case scenario. Our only focus was upon doing capital campaigns. We had a set process that we rolled out for every church. They essentially all looked the same. The companies made a lot of money and to be truthful we helped churches raise a lot of money too. However times have changed.
Our focus is total stewardship for the now and the future! We can help you raise a lot of money in a capital campaign. However we are about more than that. For instance check out the other two platforms we have for increasing giving…
