The Times Have Changed. Has Your Giving Strategy? For some of us it is almost like the way we knew things changed in a blink of an eye. They didn’t really but there are times when the speed of change catches us unaware. Tragically for the Church this is true especially when it comes to giving.
Giving is on a steady decline and projections are that by the year 2050 Americans will only give 1% of their incomes to churches. If we don’t adjust to the times we live in we are going to be unable to facilitate the missions and ministry we want.
What is behind the decline in giving? There are multiple factors but here are a few…
- We have become more secularized as a nation. You only have to watch TV, listen to the radio or even read the newspaper for this to sink in.
- Church attendance continues to decline. When there are fewer people in the pews there will be less money in the plate!
- The demographic shift in American life is impacting the Church and giving.
- Churches are slow to make the necessary changes needed to address the decline.
Don’t just sit there do something! That is what I want to scream out when I see this decline continuing to impact the Church. Too many churches only think about giving when they are in need. They either are so far behind budget that they get desperate or they only think about giving when they enter into a capital campaign. This is a mistake.
“Churches need to start thinking about giving strategies year round not just when they have a capital campaign.” That was a statement Pastor Ronnie Floyd of Cross Church one of the largest churches in America told me last December. He is right. If the only time you think about increasing giving is when you have a capital campaign you will probably struggle to make budget this year!
So, here is my advice, establish an ongoing giving plan now for your church! My focus when I work with a church is to get them fully funded not simply for a capital campaign but every week! Do you have a plan to do that? If not it is time we talked! I can help you.
